Unpacking the Intersection of Design and Artificial Intelligence: Take a Deep Dive with Design in Tech Report 2023

Deep dive into the intersection of design and AI

Hey there! If you're interested in the intersection of design and artificial intelligence, you'll want to check out the Design in Tech Report 2023 which created by John Maeda. You can read the report in this link: https://designintech.report/sxsw2023/#video.

This year's report is packed with a bunch of cool topics, like those LLM language models, pre-trained models, computational design, and loads more. There's a lot to unpack and some highlights worth sharing.

Designers are all about treating people as actual human beings, not just potential customers. But the design industry has shifted focus to things like machines, scale, and money. That said, there's a ton of work being done to create an awesome new 'ethical aesthetic'.

Apart from that, Artificial Intelligence is becoming a bigger player in the design process. While most designers surveyed believe AI won't replace visual designers for at least five years, it's already good at handling the boring stuff, like cleaning up lines and correcting images. Exciting times!

Google is totally killing it when it comes to mixing AI with design experimentation, thanks to some seriously talented people, like Martin Wattenberg and Fernanda Viegas. But, AI is also warning us about the possible side effects of "fair" algorithms that are fed from past activities and practices, leading us down the path of exclusion.

One of the hottest topics in AI right now is pre-trained models, with Simon's Scissors: Context and Cognitio being a huge deal that everyone's talking about. But, building apps using these models is no joke, as it takes time to get the hang of them and fully integrate them into your workflow. It ain't as easy as saying "Oh, this is similar to XYZ". But, trust us, the payoff for fully exploiting their power is super worth it.

Luckily, there are some amazing resources available to help developers navigate their way through this tangled web. Resources like Prompt Engineering and "On the Opportunities and Risks of Foundation Model" (2022) from Stanford Institute for Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence (HAI) are great places to start digging deeper into this topic

As we dive deeper into the fascinating world of foundation pre-trained models, we must tread carefully and keep in mind both the risks and opportunities that come with them. We need to take a mindful approach and ensure that all our AI applications are ethical and responsible. Only then can we reap the full rewards of this exciting new technology frontier.

The report also drives home the importance of simplifying your life and focusing on the things that make you happy. For example, by using AI to handle tasks you don't enjoy, you can free up more time to do the things you're passionate about. Such activities that spark joy include decision making, communicating with others, learning from mentors, building strong relationships, giving kick-ass presentations, and strategic development.

Just remember, AI is not here to replace human creativity and empathy, but rather to enhance and augment our abilities. It's a tool that can help us achieve our goals and dreams, and create a better tomorrow for all of us
